Mr. Arne Hansen, Pilkmose Fold, Denmark
Highland breeder and former board member and treasurer of the Danish Highland Cattle Society, Mr. Arne Hansen, passed away on 25th January 2018, 75 years old.
He was born on a dairy farm and since he was a little boy he showed a thorough interest in breeding. Newly married to Mrs. Sine he bought a farm with Holstein cows in 1966, but due to fertility problems the dairy herd was dispersed, and then Arne Hansen demonstrated his skills in pig breeding. In the first place Danish Landrace, but also the Yorkshire, Hampshire and Duroc breeds. Soon he had the number one pig breeding herd in Denmark.
Arne Hansen bought his first Highlanders in 1994 and for many years the Pilkmose herd counted 25 cows + followers. From pig breeding Arne Hansen had a deep knowledge of breeding principles and he knew how to adjust them to be used in his Highland herd. As a board member of the Danish breed society for 16 years he generously shared his knowledge with fellow members.
Arne Hansen never spoke with loud voice, but everyone listened – and learned – when he took the floor.
Over the years many breeding animals have left the Pilkmose herd to become foundations of new Highland herds or to introduce new high-quality bloodlines to established herds. Also, Highlanders with the Pilkmose prefix have been very successful in the showring.
Arne Hansen was a perfectionist in everything he touched – breeding pigs and Highlanders, the way he looked after the breed society’s money (treasurer for 11 years), etc. Also, he produced highly admired work of art out of pieces of wood and Highland horns.
For his achievements with his pig and Highland herds Arne Hansen received several distinctions.
We have all lost a dedicated breeder and a dear friend.
President of The Danish Highland Cattle Society
