Highland cross sale
United Auctions held their annual sale of breeding cattle on Tuesday 24 October. One of the highlights of this annual event was the high demand for quality cross Highland heifers.
The annual consignment from Conaglen Estate were in great demand selling to a top of £850 for a pen of four outstanding, seven-month-old calves weighing 207kg.
The second equally attractive pen of four fetched £700. The entire consignment of 14 were bought by a Welsh buyer who knows the cattle well, having bought them previously.
A very fine pair of well grown calves from Chris Carver of Torlundy, weighing 249kg, fetched £950.
The consignment of ten 18-month-old well bred heifers from Mr T M Nelson of Achnacloich sold to a top of £920, with the second pen of five making £850, all going to the same buyer, Fulton Ronald of Fidden, Isle of Mull.
While Heifers from Glenfeochan Estate, sold to a top of £1,250 for a 14-month-old weighing 404kg.
The cross Highland section was topped by Ellary Farms Ltd selling a pen of bulling heifers at £1,700.
It is unfortunate that the numbers forward fell well short of buyers’ requirements. Regardless of the alternatives, the first cross Highland heifer is still regarded by many as the most economical foundation for a suckler herd on Highland hills and hard times.
