Oban Breeding Sale
There was a strong demand for well-bred Cross Highland heifer calves at United Auctions annual breeding sale on 25 October, with buyers from as far afield as Ireland and Wales vying for the best lots.
Toping the trade was a wonderful consignment of 13 calves from Conaglen Estate, Ardgour selling to a top of £800 for a pen weighing 226kg. This was followed by a pen at £760, weighing 253kg, and a third pen at £750, weighing 219kg.
The annual consignment from Achnacloich sold to a top of £720 for four well-coloured calves weighing 181kg. This was followed by a pen of four younger calves at £540, weighing 168kg.
The Castles Estate calves went to their usual buyer in Wales selling to a top of £700, weighing 279 kg.
Calves from Callachally on the Isle of Mull sold to a top of £640, weighing 185kg, selling to the Isle of Skye. This was followed by a pen of three well-bred calves from Lochbuie selling at £610, weighing 189kg.
Although the numbers of Cross Highland heifer calves forward at this sale were somewhat down on previous years, the demand was such that many more of the right type could have been sold to advantage.
