Oban Autumn Show and Sale 2018

Past President, David Soutar took on the task of judging our 121st Annual Autumn Show. The Overall Champion, a yearling from Culfoich was “beautifully brought out and oozing style,” according to David, who went on to say that he hopes she continues to develop and we see her again in the show ring. He describes her as "long, deep and great on her legs with breed character stamped all over her. A worthy Champion indeed."

In David’s own words, “It was a great honour to be asked to judge this great event again. Numbers may have been down, nearer levels of 30 years ago, but by jings no lack of quality. The large number of weaned calves forward reflects the trend towards new buyers wanting to buy them young and grow their confidence with them and maybe gain a saving in transport costs. There was some concern that this number might detract from trade but it certainly did not with most sellers of young stock delighted.

“Generally, it pleased me to see prices follow the judging results but likewise it delighted me to see a good few high prices for less well placed calves.

“The Reserve Champion from Broomrigg, an in calf 3 year old was a great example of the breed - very feminine like her sister, a previous Champion at this show and sale. A reminder, if it is needed, that the breed is a source of maternal genes – a dam line breed rather than a terminal sire breed. She is out of an Inversnaid bull, a beast raised on some of the harshest hill conditions, this just endorses the fact that there is only one actual type of Highlander! It is breeding, nutrition and environment which dictate how it develops."
