Join the fundraising Highland Cattle Drove this autumn
The Rotary Club of Aberdeen - St Fittick, with Jim and Sheila Fraser of Tilbouries fold, has organised a Highland Cattle Drove to raise funds for Rotary Charities, with a donation to the Highland Cattle Society. This will take place on Sunday 5 September.
Droving was once the lifeblood of Scotland’s rural economy and, for centuries, the glens and mountain passes were alive with thousands of cattle making their way to market. With the Industrial Revolution, ships, railways and eventually lorries took over the drover’s trade and by the early 20th century the age-old droving tradition was all but dead – except in the Islands. Droving on foot continued in the Outer Hebrides until the mid-1960s.
Join for the day as we walk the ancient Fungle Drove Road Pass on Royal Deeside. Following a small drove of Highland Cattle and Jacobite soldiers over the hills to Birse Castle, giving an extraordinary insight into a lost world.
Or you can sponsor Austin (Austin Dubh of Tilbouries) on his 1st Highland Cattle Drove.
It’s a distance of 10km, climbing 1,000ft on a forest and hill track suitable for 4x4.
