Great Yorkshire Show 2024

We were welcomed to glorious weather on the Monday before the show (set up day) and woke on Tuesday to nearly one month’s worth of rain in one day! This did not dampen the spirits of our hardy members and their cattle or our judge. They all pulled out the stops to put on a fabulous show of cattle for the many visitors who were not put off by the extreme weather conditions.

Highland Champion, Lady White 144th

Overall and female champion, Lady White 144th

Matt Auld tapped out his breed champion, Lady White 144th of Balmoral owned by Coul Estates, Newtonmore and bred by our late Queen Elizabeth II. Brought out and shown by Allan MacDiarmid, her sire is Prionnsa Dubh 3rd of Balmoral out of Lady White 102nd of Balmoral. Coul Estates have over 60 head of cattle, 20 of them kept pure and 40 are crossed with the British Blue. This was Allan’s first time showing a Highlander at the Great Yorkshire Show, so a very successful day for him.

Standing in reserve was Cameron of Sguir Mor, this 5-year-old bull is owned in partnership by Dexter and Caroyln Logan and Ewen Macmillan and bred by Willie Maclean. Cameron recently stood overall reserve champion and male champion at the Royal Highland Show in June, so continuing a successful run for his owners. His sire is Eoin Mor 18th of Mottistone and his dam is Tanya 3rd of Mottistone.

Reserve female champion was Alibhe of Marrick Park, owned by Milly Bradley and bred by Julia Carr. She is by Fionn Mhor of Strathellie and her dam is Anna of Eilean Mor.

Standing in reserve to the male champion was Louis of Earn, owned by Milly Bradley and bred by Heather Corrigall. Louis is by Angus Ruadh of Wester Croachy and out of Erin of Earn. A fabulous day for Milly!

Another member having a great show was Robert and Dianne Bradley who bred and brought out the junior champion, Bonnie Melody of Moorside. Her sire is King John of West Edmondsley and her dam is Bonnie Meg 2nd of Grey Brae.

Again, Highland Cattle proved a force to be reckoned with in the Interbreed Competition when our Junior Team of Four were placed 3rd in a very strong class. They were:
Maverick of Moorside | owned and bred by Robert and Dianne Bradley shown by Robert Bradley
Bonnie Melody of Moorside | owned and bred by Robert and Dianne Bradley shown by Dianne
Maisie of Ranch | owned and bred by Graeme and Rebecca Easton shown by Graeme
Sineag Ruadh 3rd of Seam | owned and bred by Simon and Emma Haley shown by Matthew Iceton

Our Senior Team of Four in the Interbreed Competition also did extremely well being placed 4th in another strong class of cattle. They were:
Cameron of Sguir Mor | owned by Dexter and Carolyn Logan and Ewen Macmillan and and bred by Willie MacLean
Bonnie Meg of Moorside | owned and bred by Robert and Dianne Bradley shown by Robert
Bonnie of Blairlogan | owned and bred by Dexter and Carolyn Logan
Kirsty 8th of Gartocharn | owned and shown by Milly Bradley and bred by Jim and Catherine McKechnie

Our breed champion looked fantastic in the Supreme Beef Championship and was pulled out in the final four, unfortunately it is only the winner and reserve that are chosen.

One member missing from the show was our great friend Robert Phillip. Robert was sadly taken from us far too soon in February of this year. He was a friend to all who knew him, a wonderful person with a huge zest for life and the Highland Cattle Breed. He was greatly missed in the trade stand and on the showground this year.

Judges’ report

It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to judge the Highlands at the Great Yorkshire Show. Despite it being a bit damp for most of the day – and an entry of 60 plus – I thoroughly enjoyed my day.

I was most impressed with the standard of cattle brought forward and my final female line up had all the attributes I am looking for in a Highland: character, conformation and locomotion. I must congratulate all the exhibitors for the way they presented their cattle on such a dreich day.

My champion was a well brought out 3-year-old, with a very correct young cow as reserve.

Congratulations to you all.
